Tongue Control

James 3:1-18

Pastor Jeremy Helmuth

How do we know when we’ve attained maturity as a Christian?   According to God, the litmus test is our ability to control our mouth.

  • Tongue control is a sign of maturity.

We must accept four realities of our tongues.  As we work through  these truths, ask the Holy Spirit to convict you about your speech.

  • Our tongue is small but significant.
  • Our tongue can destroy everything.
  • Our tongue can be a wild, deadly beast.
  • Our tongue can bless or curse

Heavenly wisdom is pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive,  merciful, impartial, humble, selfless, and sincere.

  • Before I open my mouth, I will ask for heavenly wisdom

Discussion Questions

Getting Started

1. What ways do our tongues destroy (gossip, slander, cursing, hurtful words, lying, sarcasm, rage, flattery, boastful)? Be authentic: which one do you struggle with most?

Digging Deeper

2. Read through the following Proverbs and discuss the power of speaking kind words (Proverbs 16:24; 31:26; 15:4; 15:23; 12:25; 25:11; 13:2; 18:20; 10:21; 17:22; 12:18).

3. Why does a gentle answer turn away wrath in almost every situation (Proverbs 15:1; Galatians 6:1)?

4. Study further Matthew 12:33-37. We will be judged by every word that comes out of our mouth. Why will we either be acquitted or condemned by our words? Do our words show what is truly in our heart? How do we view this passage in light of God’s grace?

Applying the Word to Life

5. If you’re inclined to speak quickly, what can you do to slow down your tendency to speak carelessly? Instead of wishing you could take back certain words, is there something you can do to make sure only “blessings” come out of your mouth?

6. Pray Psalm 19:14 every morning before you start your day. Live out the idea of speaking only words that are pleasing to God. Before you speak, ask: “Will this build up or tear down?”

7. Do you need to seek forgiveness from someone for speaking too quickly to them (lost temper) or about them (gossip)? Decide right now that you will make your wrong right today.
