Discussion Questions

Getting Started

1. Which “supper” do you look forward to the most?  Do you have a favorite (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, etc.)?  Why is this meal your favorite?  Is there a meal you dread?  Why?

Digging Deeper

2. Read 2 Samuel 9:1-13.  David told Mephibosheth (Jonathan’s son) that he “will always eat at my table” (9:7).  This was a tremendous act of kindness because someone in the lineage of Saul could have tried to fight David to become king (1 Samuel 20:14-15).  Is there someone you need to invite to your table in order to show kindness to them?

3. God created us to gather and eat together.  There is just something “life-giving” about breaking bread together.  Discuss how many of the feasts revolved around the Hebrews eating together (Lev. 23).

4. Read the beatitudes in Matthew 5:3-12.  The same word for “blessed” in Revelation 19:9 is used in this passage as well.  The happiest people act and think differently than the rest of the world.  Do these attributes in Matthew describe your heart?

Applying the Bible

5. What are some of your dinner conversations?  Do any of them focus on God?  Do you talk about serving God?  Honoring God?  Praising God?  Glorifying God?  Take a simple step this week and make sure you bring up God as you are eating around the table with your family.

6. Is there someone you need to invite to God’s table of forgiveness and salvation this week?  After hearing what will happen to those who are not at the right party, how courageous will you become in presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ to those who need to hear this message?
