The Sovereignty of God

Pastor Jeremy Helmuth

The SIEGE of SOVEREIGNTY

The phrase “Sovereign LORD” is used 9x in Ezekiel 4-7. Sovereign means to have “supreme power and authority.” God desires to have authority over us because He knows what is best for us. The key to maturing in our faith and being joyful is the ability to place one’s self under God’s  leadership. Our sovereign God loves us so much that…

  • God will lay siege to our heart to set it free.

BLINDED by IDOLS

During Ezekiel’s day, people had idols in their life that hurt their relationship with God. And they were blinded because they didn’t see the idol as a sin. God was willing to strip everything away from them in order for them to see the idols in their life.

  • God is patient with our idol that sits on the high place;  He sometimes gives us a lifetime to notice our blind spot.
  • We start to know God when we see our idol.
  • Dear children, keep yourselves from idols (1 John 5:21).

Study and Discussion Questions

Getting Started

1. Has God laid siege to your heart in order to get your attention? Do you interpret difficult trials in your life as God punishing you, or do you humbly accept the trials and learn?

Digging Deeper

2. Read 1 Kings 3:2-3. We are told that King Solomon loved the Lord and followed after God’s commandments, but he also sacrificed at the high places. This was the story of many of the kings and the people of Israel. They loved the Lord, but they also loved other “gods” (idols). They seemed to be blinded to these idols. What are some idols that have blinded the U.S.?

3. Read about some of the kings of Judah. They share the struggle between following God wholeheartedly and following our own sin nature: Asa (1 Kings 15:11-14); Jehoshaphat (1 Kings 22:43); Joash (2 Kings 12:2-3); Amaziah (2 Kings 14:3-4); Azariah 2 Kings 15:3-4); Jotham (2 Kings 15:34-35). Can you relate to this struggle? In what areas?

4. Read Habakkuk 2:18-19 and Jonah 2:8. When we cling to an idol, we actually reject God’s love He has for us. How have you experienced the love of God? Has it been real for you? What are you doing to know God personally?

Applying the Word to Life

5. Is God sovereign over your life? If you state “Yes,” then how will you show God and others this week that you truly are dedicated to Jesus as Lord (leader) over your life?

6. Do you see your idol for what it is in your life? What will you do to flee from it? You might have to take drastic measures, but remember that it will be worth it to be free from the idol.
