The Gift of Desperation

II Kings 5:1-16

Pastor Troy Jester

Humble desperation is what invites the power of God to be demonstrated in our lives

Desperation is a gift that nobody wants but all of us need

Four Levels of Desperation

1. An awareness of need

2. An openness to the Godly counsel of others

3. A willingness to ask for help from others

4. A readiness to obey God

What level of desperation to you find yourself in today?  What is your next step?

Small Group Discussion

The Bible is full of stories that show the gift of desperation. God is drawn to the desperate. His strength is attracted to weakness.  Read the following passages and share lessons that the stories teach about desperation.

  • I Samuel 1:1-20
  • Genesis 32
  • Mark 10:46-52
  • Luke 8:40-56
  • Mark 4:35-41

We all face many struggles in our lives that lead us to a point of desperation.  It is in these desperate moments that God reveals himself in ways he has never has before.  His promises are great reminders that he cares deeply about our struggle.

  • Anxiety- Philippians 4:6-7
  • Loneliness- Deuteronomy 31:6 & 8
  • Weakness- II Corinthians 12:9
  • Guilt and Shame- Romans 8:1, I John 1:9
  • Fear- Isaiah 41:10

Share examples of times in your life when you were at a point of desperation and how God showed up during that time

Pray for those in your group who are in a desperate place at the moment
