Pastor Jeremy Helmuth

Are you growing in your faith? Are you doing more now as a Christian than you did when you first believed? You must be committed to this discipline:

Measure the level of your maturity.

TOLERANCE: America’s newest RELIGION

We seem to tolerate sin for these various reasons:

  • We want to feel loved, so we show fictional love (love without truth).
  • We are reluctant to repent because we doubt God’s ultimate judgment.
  • We believe that sinning allows us to experience the depth of God’s grace.

Jesus promises that true believers will be given:

  • Authority over the nations.
  • The morning star.

Discussion Questions

Getting Started

1. We are told in this passage that Jesus’ eyes are like blazing fire and these eyes are able to search your heart and mind. When is the last time you have paused to consider your thoughts, motives and actions? How can you increase your awareness of your holy God?

Digging Deeper

2. Read 2 Timothy 4:1-2. Study each of these words and discuss what it means to “reprove,” “rebuke,” and “exhort.” Do different situations call for different kinds of confrontation?

3. Read Romans 16:17 and 2 John 10-11. These words are strong. What does it mean to avoid someone? How can we remain gentle, humble, and patient, and yet at the same time we don’t allow someone who has poisonous heresy into our midst?

4. Read Psalm 133:1; 1 Peter 3:8-11; Proverbs 16:24; Romans 14:1-4; Ephesians 4:2. When there are disagreements, God wants us to strive for unity. What are some ways you have found helpful in showing love to others even when you have a differing opinion?

Applying the Bible

5. When is the last time you have measured your level of maturity? Are you growing in your faith? Are you more dedicated to serving than you were years ago? Do you care about others more than you did in the past? Is your relationship with Jesus deeper? Since we often think more highly of ourselves than we should, how can you objectively measure your growth?

6. Do you need to be okay with being hated? Does God want you to be intolerant with a sin in your midst another Christian is involved in? Do you have the courage to create conflict to restore someone?
