The Battle against Satan

Pastor Jeremy Helmuth

The FIRST SIN

Often, we look at Adam and Eve in order to figure out the source of the first sin, but Satan’s heart produced the first sin in the universe.

  • Pride is at the root of all sin.

The Guardian CHERUB

Before the earth was created, God created the angels. It appears that God formed a hierarchy of the angelic realm and the leader of the angels was Satan. God created Satan to be a completely perfect being with two powerful attributes:

  • Full of wisdom.
  • Perfect in beauty.

Satan’s DECEPTION—Our DEFENSE

Satan uses what was once good in him to deceive us into thinking that something is good, but in reality is evil. That is why Satan will use pride in our hearts to lead us astray. Ask God to help you see the two fold plan of Satan clearly and then how to respond to his schemes:

  • Satan twists truth and displays evil as good.
  • Proximity to the lamb produces protection.

Study and Discussion Questions

Getting Started

1. Have you ever thought about the power of music upon the mind and emotions?  Have you ever felt like you were under a spell with a certain song? What do you think about Satan being the director of music in heaven? What does this teach us about the power of music for both good and evil?

Digging Deeper

2. Read about Satan’s future (Rev. 20:7-10) and how the eternal fire was prepared for fallen angels (Mt. 25:41). Discuss how Satan knows his ending and how he wants as many people as possible to go to that place of torment also. Compare the heart of Satan versus the heart of God (2 Pt. 3:9; Ez. 18:23).

3. Read 2 Peter 3:16. Have you ever met another Christian (or a group of believers) who have twisted Scripture to serve their own purposes? How do we make sure that we never allow Satan to twist truth for us to justify certain actions?

4. Read Zechariah 3:1-2; Rev. 12:10-11; Job 1:6-12. Satan is an accuser, so when you hear the lies as a whisper in your ear, pray to Jesus, thanking Him for His blood which covers sin.

Applying the Word to Life

5. Pride is at the root of all sin because pride shouts to the universe: “I want to be my own god and do whatever I want to do!” How can you defeat this desire to be your own god and instead learn to submit to what God wants in your life?

6. Do you listen to the lyrics of songs? Or do you just focus on the beat? In what ways can you begin teaching your children to discern what kind of music they allow into their soul?

7.  Do you have a plan for your marriage (1 Corinthians 7:5)?
